Join Us for a Practical Workshop on RTI for Everyday Problems |
Dear Moneylifers, |
We're kicking off August with an in-person seminar on an incredibly powerful, yet underused tool available to every citizen: the Right to Information (RTI). Whether you're battling red tape or just trying to get a response from a government body or regulator, RTI can be your most effective ally, if you know how to use it well. That's exactly what our upcoming session aims to help you with: |
The session will also help you understand how to navigate issues and concerns that can be taken up with key regulatory bodies such as the RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, EPFO and others—especially when official channels fail to deliver timely or adequate responses. |
While most people are aware of the RTI Act, very few know how to use it effectively to solve problems. This session will focus on exactly that: how to draft an effective RTI application, how to frame your questions and how to follow up when replies are delayed or inadequate. Bhaskar Prabhu, who has helped thousands of citizens file and fight for information, will walk us through real-life examples of how RTI can be used to obtain long-pending documents from government departments, to nudge public sector banks and regulators to respond, to expose delays, inconsistencies and corruption in civic services and to build pressure for action when official complaints go ignored. |
This is not a legal theory session that focuses only on the rules stipulated by the RTI Act, it's a hands-on guide for anyone who has ever felt stonewalled by red tape, especially when dealing with regulators, financial institutions or local authorities. |
If you've ever filed a complaint and received no response, if you've run into bureaucratic silence over a pension, refund, insurance claim or service failure, or if you want to help others find their voice, you will benefit from this session. |

Counselling & Helplines |
Our new credit counselling initiative, led by Aparna Ramachandra, founder-director of Rectify Credit, continues to see strong participation. While it's encouraging to see people actively seeking help and taking steps towards resolution, it's also deeply worrying to see how many people are falling into financial distress—often due to small-ticket personal loans and aggressive recovery practices. The response we've seen confirms what we feared: that the problem is larger and more widespread than what public data or official channels reveal. |
We've been offering structured, one-on-one guidance to help individuals understand their credit reports, prioritise repayment and engage with lenders. These sessions are appointment-based and open to anyone willing to take that first step toward financial clarity. |
At the same time, our regular helplines continue to receive a steady stream of queries—ranging from housing society disputes, insurance and mediclaim issues, to banking, digital frauds and other consumer grievances. Our senior counsellors, Mr Shirish Shanbhag and Mr Abhay Datar, continue to offer their time and guidance through the online helplines, phone calls and in-person sessions at our office. We are grateful for their continued commitment. |
